What Makes Flax Seeds Nutritionally Distinctive?

Three components set flax seeds apart from most other seeds and plant foods:

1. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — Flax seeds are one of the richest plant-based sources of ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid. ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning the body cannot produce it — it must come from diet. 2. Lignans — Flax seeds contain more lignans than virtually any other food. Lignans are phytoestrogens — plant compounds that interact weakly with estrogen receptors in the body. The gut microbiome converts flax lignans into enterolactone and enterodiol, compounds that have been studied for their potential roles in hormonal and cellular health.

3. Soluble and insoluble fiber — Ground flax seeds provide both fiber types. Soluble fiber forms a gel in the digestive tract; insoluble fiber adds bulk. This combination is relevant to research on blood sugar response, cholesterol levels, and digestive regularity.

Blood Sugar and Insulin Response
